The Department of Science and Technology has set up the Bioinformatics Service Platform (BSP)
to provide coordinated bioinformatics support to the South African biotechnology industry and
life science researchers, through access to human and computing infrastructure and bioinformatics expertise.
BSP is an independent organisational structure and will provide an over-arching body to coordinate specialised bioinformatics training and services in South Africa. BSP will be hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with the central office at the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) in Cape Town. It will include a Project Manager and bioinformatics support staff.
The Department of Science and Technology has appointed a Steering Committee to oversee the BSP. The appointment process of the steering committee was based on nominations received through an open call.
The BSP Manager from May 2016 is Dr John Poole.
